Would you use a coupon or discount card if you ate out with friends?

September 1, 2010

I went out to dinner with friends and when the bill came I pulled out a coupon so we could save money. The people at the table acted all embarrasssed and wondered why I would make them look so small. I have not heard from any one from that group since.

I suspect they are embarrassed to be seen with someone who can not afford to pay full price. Was I rude to pull out a coupon without telling them first?

Oh my goodness i don’t believe what i’m hearing.
I went out to dinner with my pal, and she said "by gosh. I wish i had a coupon…"
In the credit crunch now, you should be saving what you can.
it shows that the friends you went out to dinner with are not your friends at all.
Ring them? You contact them? You might have got the wrong end of the stick.
But, personally i think it is time to let people like that go….
Especially now when the world is in finial crisis
Friends shouldn’t be waisting your money, when you have a coupon?
I personally think coupons are a blessing from god! Along with freebies of course…
and if my friend whipped out a coupon when we were sharing the bill i would have irrupted into applause! (not literally, but you know what i mean.)
    Buuuuut
    if you said
" can we go to this restrant on this day, because we can get discount!!" That is kindaaa rude.
    or..
if you got a free meal. i tend to use that if i ever eat alone.
I hope this answers your question!

    wow
if that’s all it takes to offend people then you had better find yourself some new friends

  3. Maria M says:

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECK NO! i love me some coupons (:

  4. Mittmoudh R says:

No, it’s called an Entertainment Book. That establishment paid to have the coupon distributed. Unless they wanted people to use them, they would not put them out

  5. Bridget Jones says:

no, it’s not rude. If you can save money then they should be applauding you. The sound too stupid to even know coupons exist! Never pay full price for ANYTHING!!

  6. kwflamingo says:

My friends and I always use our 2-4-1 coupons. It saves money and allows to visit pricier restaurants. Get yourself some new friends!

  7. mexi_fry_1 says:

    HECK YEAH!
BUT all the people that are friends with would never judge us just because we used a coupon or something. We would all encourage eachother to use them. If they think you made them look bad oh well! That is their problem. You are the one saving money! Keep on using coupons etc! Your really the smart one!

  8. tammmy s says:

No. Where did you meet these rich people.

Take me to dinner and we can use a coupon.

Any restauraunt that puts out coupons is not so fancy that you should be embarrased to use them.

I take that back. IF— you were using it in leu of cash that would be rude. Such as a 2-4-1 but you were the free one. Or the shallow friends thought that was what you were doing. I would hesitate to apply "friends" to these people.

  9. LAURIE says:

My friends or I will usually announce that one of us has a coupon. That way there are no surprises. We really like saving money so their is no embarrassment with us. To bad that your friends can’t admit that saving money is a good thing and that they would be embarrassed because you did this.

  10. Irish says:

That’s too bad. Now you know who your friends really are. I use coupons whenever and btw, so do my friends. You’re doing the right thing.

  11. Reading girl says:

Sounds like your friends are a bunch of stuck up prats! My friends and I go out of our way to find vouchers so that we can find places to eat out and get a good bargain!

If these people are really that shallow then you are probably better of without them – I’d be stoked if my friend helped me save some money – it means more to spend on something else or another evening out!

  12. Rebecca C says:

I don’t think it was rude at all! In times like now thiftiness should be applauded. Good job on being financially responsible and saving money.

  13. Queen Of Burning Heart says:

Of course it wasn’t rude! They’re just being petty, thinking they’re too great to use coupons.

  14. Stevie N says:

To be very honest…your friends don’t sound much like friends at all!
In these times of need…use all the coupons you can find!

Don’t feel bad about not asking them first.
    You helped them save money!!
    You’re smart!

  15. fletcher219 says:

In this age of paying upwards of $60 to go to a regular restaurant and no raises. Finding new ways to pay is great.

  16. Jessy D says:

Maybe they have enough money to throw around. I sure as hell know that I don’t and I would appreciate it if one of my friends had a coupon. Since when did saving money become embarrassing? Get yourself some new friends!

  17. BabeHeart says:

I see no issue with that at all. In fact, coupons aren’t used only by those who cannot afford to pay full price, bu those who feel it’s foolish to pay full price when you can get a discount by handing the cashier a piece of paper.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use a coupon if I had one for that establishment. If others don’t like it, that’s their issue. I would have a tough time respecting anyone who didn’t find saving money (or not wasting it) a good idea.

  18. karinmaxim says:

i would think if you were using a coupon everyone would be happy to share in the discount.

  19. Ace says:

The way things have been going, heck yea!

    We need to save money.
Atleast you now know who your real friends are and who is going to be the rich one in the future….you!

  20. theacrob says:

There are two ways to see this. Now, if you make a habit out of cutting corners, using coupons, making deals, and having fits "We have to go on THURSDAY or my coupon expires!" I can see why your friends are less than thrilled. But, if you just happened to have a coupon and used it to either save yourself or save the group some money, there is no problem. Given the current economy, your friends better get over themselves and start living a more realistic lifestyle.

  21. Snitzels says:

Sounds like your friends thought you were implying they are cheap? Maybe next time whisper to the host ahead of time that you have a discount card and ask if that person would like to use it. It’s kind of laughable for most people to get that upset over someone trying to help, but they sound a wee bit more sensitive than "most people".

  22. SayWhat? says:

There is no way you are the rude one. They have their priorities mixed up.

The only exception to this is if you guilted them into going to that particular restaurant against their objections without telling them about your coupon. And then when you pulled it out, they put the whole thing together that they had been had.

  23. goaheadnfireme says:

Those were not your friends my dear. It’s perfectly fine to try to save money. Our economy is in the crapper.

  24. deanglo332 says:

I would, I would be dumb not to save the money.
